Air Conditioner Error Code Retrieval Guide
Find your brand and controller below to read the fault code your air conditioner has stored. Note the code before you call, because it tells the technician where to start.
ARC series infrared handset (ARC455A, ARC452A, ARC433B, ARC423A, ARC417A, ARC447A)
Point the remote at the indoor unit.
Hold TIMER CANCEL for 5 seconds. The temperature display changes over to the malfunction code display and you get a long beep confirming the change.
Press TIMER CANCEL repeatedly to step through the codes.
Listen to the indoor unit as you step. A short beep means no match. Two short beeps mean the tens digit matches but the units digit does not. A long continuous beep means the code showing is the stored malfunction code.
Write the code down before you exit.
Exit
Hold TIMER CANCEL for 5 seconds. The display also clears itself if no button is pressed for 1 minute.
Variant
On ARC433B67, 68, 69 and 76 you can instead press TEMP ▲, TEMP ▼ and MODE together to enter diagnosis mode. Step the tens digit with the temp buttons until you hear “pi pi”, press MODE to move to the units digit, step until you hear the long beep, then press MODE to exit and ON/OFF twice to return to normal.
Daikin Handheld Remote
BRC1E navigation controller (BRC1E51, BRC1E52, BRC1E62, BRC1E73)
On a fault the green operation lamp flashes and the bottom of the screen reads “Error: Push Menu button”.
Press Menu/OK to display the error code and the unit details.
For the history, go back to the basic screen and hold Cancel for 4 seconds or more. This opens Service Settings.
Select Error History and press Menu/OK.
Choose RC Error History for the last 10 remote controller errors, or Indoor unit Error History for the last 5 indoor unit errors.
Use ▲ and ▼ to select the unit number. Each record shows the unit, error code, date and time.
Exit
Press Cancel to step back out one screen at a time.

Press ▲ or ▼ to change the Unit No. until the indoor unit beeps.
Press the MODE selector. The upper digit of the malfunction code flashes.
Press ▲ or ▼ until the indoor unit beeps, which sets the upper digit.
Press MODE again. The lower digit flashes.
Press ▲ or ▼ until you get a continuous beep. The code now displayed is the stored malfunction code.
Mitsubishi Electric Handheld Remote
PAR-SL100A-E and PAR-SL101A-E wireless controller (Mr. Slim and City Multi)
If a weekly timer is running, turn it off before you start.
Hold the CHECK button for 5 seconds to enter service mode, then press CHECK again to select Self-check.
Use the TEMP ▲ and TEMP ▼ buttons to set the refrigerant address (Mr. Slim) or M-NET address (City Multi) of the unit you want to interrogate.
Read the result off the indoor unit, not the handset. The check code is given by the number of beeps from the indoor unit and the number of blinks of the OPERATION INDICATOR lamp.
Exit
Press ON/OFF. The indicator and the address display switch off and the self check ends.
Mitsubishi Electric Wired Wall Controller
PAR-40MAA and PAR-40MAAU MA controller
On a fault the operation LED blinks and the screen shows the error code, the error unit, the refrigerant address, the model name, the date and time the error occurred and the serial number.
Press MENU, select Service and press SELECT. A password window appears.
Enter the maintenance password. Use F1 and F2 to move the cursor, F3 and F4 to set each digit, then press SELECT.
Select Check from the Service menu, then Error history, then press SELECT. Up to 16 records are held, four to a page, newest at the top.
For a specific address, select Self check from the Diagnosis menu and press SELECT. Use F1 and F2 to enter the refrigerant address (Mr. Slim) or M-NET address (City Multi) and press SELECT. The screen returns the error code, unit number and attribute for that address.
Note
On City Multi the Check menu offers Error history only. On Mr. Slim there are additional options.
Mitsubishi Electric Wired Wall Controller
PAR-21MAA, older MA controller
Press CHECK twice in succession within 3 seconds to enter self check.
Set the address with TEMP ▲ and TEMP ▼: 01 to 50 for an M-NET address, 00 to 15 for a refrigerant address.
About 3 seconds after you stop changing it, the address goes from flashing to steady and the self check begins.
The result appears as a 4-digit or 2-digit check code.
Exit
Press CHECK twice within 3 seconds to return to the pre-check state, or press ON/OFF, which also stops the indoor units.
Extra
To test the controller itself, hold CHECK for 5 seconds or more. “PLEASE WAIT” shows and the RUN lamp flashes. A result of NG, E3, 6833, 6832 or ERC points at the controller or transmission line noise. Hold CHECK 5 seconds to reset, then allow about 30 seconds to recover.
MHI Wired Wall Controller
RC-E5 wired remote control
On a fault the operation/check indicator flashes red and the LCD shows the check code with the indoor unit number. In normal operation the same lamp is lit green.
For live operating data, press CHECK on the master remote control.
On the Operation data screen, press SET.
If “I/U No” appears, select the unit with the ▲ and ▼ buttons above CHECK, then press SET.
Step through the 39 operation data items with ▲ and ▼: mode, temperatures, pressures, fan speeds and so on.
Watch out MHI does not document a separate error history recall on the RC-E5. Treat the code on screen as the live fault and capture it before you cycle the power.
MHI Wired Wall Controller
RC-EX3 and RC-EX3A touch controller
On a fault the screen reads “Prot.stp.ON E○ Touch here for contact. History can be checked from Menu.” and the operation lamp turns red or orange.
For service data, press MENU on the front screen.
Press NEXT, then SERVICE.
Press SERVICE & MAINTENANCE, enter the service pass code and press SET.
Press OPERATION DATA and select the indoor unit you want.
Note
The Service setting branch also carries IU address, next service date, error display, saving IU settings and indoor unit capacity display.
Watch out The on-screen prompt confirms history is available from the menu, but MHI keeps the step-by-step in the installation manual rather than the user manual. Have the installation manual for the specific controller on hand.
MHI Handheld Remote
RAC splits (SRK, SRF, SRR, DXK) service mode via handset and unit lamps
Turn the power to the air conditioner off and wait 1 minute or longer.
Turn the power back on while holding the indoor unit’s ON/OFF button. Within a minute the indoor unit buzzes to confirm it is in service mode.
Within 1 minute of power-up, send a signal from the handset set to cooling, fan speed MED, 21 °C.
Count the lamps. The RUN light gives the tens digit and the TIMER light gives the units digit. Four RUN flashes and two TIMER flashes is code 42.
To pull other data, repeat with a different combination of operation mode, fan speed and set temperature. The combinations return up to 5 previous error codes, the sensor temperatures recorded at the time of each error, and up to 10 previous stop codes.
Note
The full combination table and the service data record form are in the MHIAA Service Support Handbook. Fill the form in as you go rather than trying to hold ten stop codes in your head.
Panasonic Handheld Remote
Infrared handset, residential and light commercial splits
Point the remote control at the indoor unit.
Press and hold the CHECK button for 5 seconds. It is recessed, so use a pin or similar pointed object. The display shows “- -”.
Press the TIMER ▲ or TIMER ▼ button repeatedly to step through the error codes, H11 to H99 and the F range.
When the displayed code matches the code stored in the unit, the indoor unit beeps four times and the operation indicator lights up. That is your code.
Write it down before you cancel.
Exit
Keep the CHECK button depressed for 5 seconds to cancel the diagnosis function.
Note
The AUTO switch on the indoor unit gives forced operation on a locked-out unit. You will hear four beeps rather than one, and compressor and fan speed cannot be adjusted. Forced operation is blocked for some faults.
Panasonic Wired Wall Controller
CZ-RTC5 and CZ-RTC5B high-spec wired controller
Press and hold three buttons together for 4 seconds or more: the Return button, the Energy saving button and the ▶ right arrow.
Select Service check from the maintenance menu.
The alarm history is displayed, holding information on 4 errors. A slot reading “[---]” means no error has been recorded there.
ActronAir Wall Controllers (LM7, LM24, LR7, LC7)
The fault code appears on the wall controller display, as E followed by the code number on most ducted ranges.
On the LM7 the HEAT light also flashes three times every 10 seconds while a diagnosis code is active.
Note the code, then take it to the table for that unit series. The scheme changed several times, so identify the unit before you look the code up.
Watch out there is no stored-fault recall procedure for the LM7, LR7 or LC7. What is on the display is the live fault. Photograph it before you isolate.
Fujitsu Wired Wall Controller
UTY-RNN series wired remote controller
“E:EE” on the clock display means the unit needs inspection.
Press both SET TEMPERATURE ▲ and SET TEMPERATURE ▼ together for 5 seconds or more to start the self diagnosis. On some models the combination is both set temperature buttons plus START/STOP together for 5 seconds or more.
The current error code is displayed.
For the history, press START/STOP to move into the error history display.
Use the SET TEMPERATURE buttons to select the error history number. The controller stores up to 16 memorised error codes, numbered 0 to F.
Exit
Hold both SET TEMPERATURE buttons for 5 seconds or more, or leave it for 20 seconds with no key input.
Note
An error display only appears during operation, so the unit needs to be running.
Fujitsu Wired Wall Controller
Wired wall controllerOlder hard-wired controllers showing EE:EE
With “EE:EE” on the display, hold Energy Save and Zone Control together for more than 3 seconds.
The underlying error code appears on the LCD.
The same button combination returns the display to normal.
LG Wired Wall Controller
PREMTB001, PREMTBB01 and similar wired controllers
The error code is displayed on the controller along with the maintenance code.
On group control the characters cycle one at a time, so CH05 appears as C, then H, then 0, then 5. Watch a full cycle before you write it down.
Installer setting mode is entered by pressing and holding the settings button for more than 3 seconds. A short press only opens the user settings.
Watch out LG does not document an error history on this controller. The code on screen is the live fault only.
Hisense Wireless Remote
Wall mounted splits (Free-match and VRF indoor), wireless remote
Run the air conditioner from the wireless remote controller.
Press the SLEEP button 4 times in succession.
The fault code appears on the display for 10 seconds, then disappears automatically. Photograph it or write it down immediately.
“ER” on the display means a communication failure with the indoor control board rather than a plant fault.
Hisense Wireless Remote
Floor standing types (L5B and L5C series)
Without the remote: press the CLOCK button 8 times in succession. The fault code shows on the LCD for 10 seconds then clears.
With the remote: press the SLEEP button 8 times in succession on L5B, or 4 times on L5C.
“ER” means a communication problem between the display panel and the indoor control board.
Watch out The button and the count are not the same across series. Check which series you are on before you decide the unit has no fault.
Hisense Wired Wall Controller
Duct, cassette, ceiling and floor types, YXC-A01U(E) wired controller
A failure lamp illuminates and the error code is displayed numerically on the wired controller.
“FE” means the wired controller cannot receive signals from the indoor unit control board, which is a wiring or addressing problem.
Where there is no wired controller, read the display panel lamps: the Run lamp (LED2, red) flashes the tens digit and the Defrost lamp (LED5, green) flashes the units digit. Three flashes then six flashes is code 36.
On the indoor control board itself, LED2 shows the tens digit and LED3 the units digit. “00” means no fault.
